Hepatitis A found in food handler; Alberta health officials issue public alert

EDMONTON – Alberta Health Services has issued a public alert following confirmation of hepatitis A in a food handler in Edmonton.
The health agency says the infected individual helped to prepare food at the London Local restaurant in the city’s southwest last month.
Health officials say anyone who ate at the location on Ellwood Drive from Aug. 13 to Aug. 18, Aug. 20 to Aug 24 and on Aug. 27 has been exposed and should call the 811 Health Link immediately to be assessed.
People should also monitor themselves for symptoms for up to 50 days from the time they ate at the restaurant.
Signs include tiredness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and jaundice.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by a virus but is rarely fatal, although it can cause debilitating symptoms.
Officials say there is no ongoing risk of infection associated with the London Local restaurant.
