LETHBRIDGE – An Alberta judge will deliver a verdict in three weeks in the case of a couple charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life to their toddler who died of bacterial meningitis.
The trial for David and Collet Stephan stretched out to three months after beginning in June.
Their son Ezekiel died of bacterial meningitis but the Stephans were treating him with herbal remedies because they thought he had croup.
David Stephan says they believed he was getting better and say the boy was without oxygen for nearly nine minutes because the ambulance wasn’t properly equipped.
The prosecution says the Stephans were eventually made aware Ezekiel had a form of meningitis and a reasonable person would have taken him to a doctor.
