EDMONTON – Environment and Climate Change Canada says there have been 18 probable or confirmed tornadoes in Alberta so far this year.
With several weeks left in the tornado season, that number has already surpassed Alberta’s 30-year average of 12.
Meteorologist Kyle Fougere says there have been 13 twisters in Saskatchewan, which has an average of 18 a year.
Manitoba, with an average of 10, has had four.
He says Alberta has been the hardest hit because of a lot of wet weather and thunderstorm activity.

A high-pressure system with more summerlike temperatures has moved through the area, but Fougere says more tornadoes could still be on the way.
Storm chaser Chris Kiernan is based out of Beaumont, Alberta, just south of Edmonton.
He says he has been out most days in the last two weeks.
Kiernan says there are usually a lot of “bust days” with no storm activity in a target area, but so far that’s happened just once this year.
