CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary police have charged 63-year-old Wayne Ogden Huston, in connection with a brutal case of animal cruelty that has left neighbors traumatized.
He is facing one count to kill, maim, wound, or poison a domestic cat, and one count of unlawfully causing pain or suffering.
It incident happened overnight Wednesday in an apartment building in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows.
“Witnesses claimed to observe a male beating a cat with a baseball bat,” said Duty Inspector Melanie Onescu. “The cat was deceased and the offender was taken into custody.”
This woman, who does not want to be named, saw it happen while she was out on her deck.
“I saw the gentleman next door come out calling his kitty, and I just pointed out the kitty to him. And next thing I know the bat came down. I just got off that chair and I just ran over and screamed what the f–k are you doing?” she said. “I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There was no way I could protect the cat.”
She added the cat was clearly in pain and then ran back home to call for help, though she was initially afraid to call 911.
“I was scared because we live right next door and he knew it was me. I called my sister right away and we talked, and she said it had to be done,” she said. “The worst thing. There’s no reason for that. There’s no reason. No reason. And it’s going to be a nightmare I’ll have for life.”
That man is facing several animal cruelty related charges.
Oncescu said it was a pretty upsetting scene for those who witnessed the attack.
“Always make sure that if you witness something like this or any other crime that is troublesome to make sure that you seek support.”
Neighbors added there are a lot of animal lovers in the complex, and never want to see the attacker again.
“I love animals, and I think that’s disgusting. It is just disgusting. I’m just angry,” said Debbie. “I hope he doesn’t come back. If he comes back, God help him.”
His next court appearance is on Wednesday, July 31.
