Alberta MLAs tangled in another filibuster debate

EDMONTON – It is another marathon debate in the Alberta Legislature with an over 40 hour NDP filibuster.

This time it is over three bills including Bill 8, which the NDP described as an intentional attack on Gay-Straight Alliances in Alberta schools.

“We know it’s a bill that attacks students, we know it’s a bill that attacks our most vulnerable youth,” said NDP MLA Thomas Dang. “We know it was designed to that and really designed to destroy GSAs.”

On Thursday, Opposition leader Rachel Notley spoke following a break in the debate calling out the UCP for its hateful legislation.

For members of the United Conservatives, the filibuster is outrageous

“We have now seen the NDP continue to try to derail and stop our legislation, Alberta’s legislation from making it through the house for well over 30 hours,” said MLA Jason Nixon. “It’s kind of shocking.”

Fellow UCP MLA Doug Schweitzer said he doesn’t understand why the NDP are blocking legislation that was promised during the 2019 election.

The party also claimed that Gay-Straight Alliances in Alberta will continue to have the most protection in the country.
