Western premiers meet in Edmonton

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Jason Kenney opened the western premiers meeting Thursday in Edmonton saying the leaders around the table are all in the right place at the right time.

He says his goal is to make the western provinces and territories the source of Canada’s strength, economic growth and opportunity.

Kenney says he is hoping to count on his fellow premiers and territorial leaders as partners in delivering their shared goals.

This is the first time Kenney has sat down with B.C. Premier John Horgan, who is on the opposite side of the debate over the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Horgan has vowed to use every tool in his toolbox to stop the project, which would triple the amount of oil shipped through the line from Alberta to tankers on the B.C. coast. Kenney, in turn, has proclaimed a law that would allow Alberta to cut oil shipments to B.C. in retaliation.
