‘An absolute honour’: Notley concedes, re-elected in Edmonton-Strathcona

EDMONTON — NDP leader Rachel Notley’s time as premier has come to an end after an overwhelming UCP majority victory.
She becomes the opposition leader and holds onto the Edmonton-Strathcona riding. In her concession speech Notley thanked supporters adding “it is such an honour to be here with you all tonight”.

Despite the loss, Notley joked that she was thankful “we expanded Alberta’s craft beer industry”.
“Yes, tonight’s result is not the one that we hoped for or worked so hard for.
But you know as I look out at all of you I am filled with an enormous sense of gratitude and pride.”
Notley was elected premier in May of 2015 and formed the first NDP government in Alberta. She was first elected as an NDP MLA in 2008, serving the constituency of Edmonton-Strathcona.

Born in Edmonton and raised in Fairview, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at the University of Alberta and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.

She practised labour law and workers’ compensation advocacy and also served as an adviser to British Columbia’s attorney general. Her father Grant Notley was the leader of Alberta’s first NDP opposition.
