Long journey for Alberta missionaries ends at YYC

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A large group of missionaries with the Alberta-based charity Haiti Arise arrived at Calgary International Airport Sunday afternoon.

They had to be airlifted from their compound to the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, because the roads of the island nation were clogged with violent protests.

Among the first off the plane and through customs at YYC, was Haiti Arise co-founder Lisa Honorat.

She was greeted by her younger children who went running when they saw her come through the gates.

“To see them was a relief,” said Honorat.

“To just be back home with them. Still, part of my heart is there. My husband is there and, you know, people that you love.”

Teenager Ava Kauffman said this was her second missionary trip and described the atmosphere at the Haiti Arise compound.

“It really wasn’t all that bad even after we were kind of stuck there, but we didn’t have as much to do, and the feeling was a lot different when we knew we couldn’t leave.”

Protesters have taken to the streets in recent days to demand the resignation of the Haitian president.
