Woman dead after home invasion

EDMONTON (CITYNEWS) – One woman is dead and a man is seriously injured following a home invasion Friday night.

Shortly before 9 p.m., officers were called to a home near 119 Avenue and 61 Street for reports of shots being fired.

Officers entered the home and found two people with injuries. Neighbours tell CityNews that they say paramedics working on someone on the street Friday night and police were out with long guns, canvassing the area asking if anyone saw anything.

Both the man and woman were transported to hospital. The 56-year-old man had serious injuries, the woman, who’s been identified as Barbara Nelson, 59, eventually succumbed to her injuries.

The EPS Homicide Section has since taken over the investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday morning.

There’s no word on any suspects–who reportedly fled the scene before police got there–or a suspect vehicle description, but investigators believe it was a targeted attack.

Other neighbours CityNews spoke to say they’re not surprised to hear this happened in their community, citing the comings and goings of people at one of the houses in the area that’s been blocked off.
