Upcoming Alberta election could make history

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – By the end of May, Albertans will have gone to the polls in the next provincial election, but we still don’t know the exact voting date.

However, there’s still lots to talk about ahead of what may be one of the most hotly contested elections in history.

Mount Royal University’s Duane Bratt said it’s anyone’s guess when the vote will be called, we just have to wait for the premier to call it.

As of now, the United Conservative Party (UCP) has the most number of candidates, followed by the Alberta Party, then the New Democratic Party (NDP), and finally the Liberals.

For the United Conservatives, the high amount of contested nominations is a good sign.

“A lot of media coverage has been on some of the wacko candidates the UCP has put forward, or those contesting nominations, but the fact is they’ve been very competitive, people want to be the UCP nomination.”

But Bratt thinks it’s no surprise a lot of NDP MLA’s are not seeking re-election as it’s common at most elections.

In the meantime get prepared for months of campaign-style announcements.

“You’re going to be seeing ministers doing a lot of this in the pre-writ period, and all governments do that.”
