New Trans Mountain hearings begin in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Indigenous groups will have their say on the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion here in Calgary over the next few days.

Oral reconsideration hearings are taking place at the National Energy Board headquarters in downtown Calgary Tuesday through Thursday.

The hearings were called after the Federal Court of Appeals overturned the approval of the Trans Mountain expansion in August due to a lack of consultation with Indigenous peoples and a lack of environmental assessment for the increased tanker traffic off the BC coast.

There will also be sessions in Victoria and Nanaimo in the coming weeks.

The contentious pipeline expansion was first proposed in 2013 and has faced staunch opposition from coastal communities ever since. A pipeline has already been in place for several decades, but this expansion would triple the capacity of the pipeline from Alberta to Burnaby.

In May of this year, the federal government purchased the pipeline for $4.5 billion in order to make sure the project was completed.
