Today is World Diabetes Day

Wednesday is World Diabetes Day, and this year’s theme is “the family and diabetes.”

The International Diabetes Federation said that most of the 425 million cases of diabetes around the world are Type 2, which is largely preventable through physical activity and a healthy diet.

That means families play a key role in addressing risk factors and must be provided with the education, resources and environments to live a healthy lifestyle.

The foundation also said that diabetes puts a financial burden on families with the cost of insulin injections and daily monitoring consuming half of a family’s average disposable income in many countries.

The Canadian Diabetes Association said more than 10 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes and 20 Canadians are diagnosed every hour.
