Calgary makes 2026 Olympic shortlist

CALGARY (660 NEWS) -The International Olympic Committee says Calgary is in the final three of candidates still considering a bid for the 2026 Games.

The others are Stockholm, Sweden, as well as Milan and Cortina, Italy.

The IOC has dropped Turkey out of contention.

It says Calgary is a good candidate because 80 per cent of venues are already built, although some need upgrades.

“Calgary boasts valuable experience and expertise in hosting winter sports competitions and other major events,” the IOC finds. “The city, the province and its people have a deep love and affinity for winter sports. In dialogue and partnership with the IOC, Calgary has developed a Games concept and vision that fit the new era of Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm and meet the city’s long-term goals.”

It adds, two new venues will need to be built, but they will have a lasting value for the city.

Calgary will hold a public vote on whether to move forward with a bid Nov. 13.
