Edmonton pharmacist fined for using someone’s health information inappropriately

EDMONTON – An Edmonton pharmacist is facing a hefty fine for accessing and using someone else’s health information for personal gain.

The Alberta government says Stanislaus Soosai looked up information on a person he’d been in a car crash with.

He was apparently going to use this information to try and persuade the other driver to no file an insurance claim.

A complaint was submitted to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) in April 2018 and an investigation was opened.

Soosai was charged in July 2019 and is now facing a $6,000 fine and a $1,000 victim fine surcharge.

In the last 20 years, there have been 18 convictions under the Health Information Act.
