AJHL delays start of regular season

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Junior-A hockey players in Alberta will have to wait a little longer before hitting the ice this season.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League announced it is delaying the start of the 2020/21 season originally scheduled for Sept. 18.

Players and coaches are allowed to take part in training camps and a development season starting Aug. 31.

“As anxious as we all are to return to competition and embrace our communities, public safety and the safety of our athletes has to be the priority,” said AJHL Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk.

“The opportunity for an AJHL Development Season will amplify the League’s ability to provide our athletes with a valuable experience through the quality instruction of our coaches and access to team training resources.”

In a release, the AJHL said current provincial restrictions and the boundaries of Hockey Alberta’s Return to Hockey Plan mean it can’t start the regular season on time.

The league said it will resume regular season play as soon as provincial regulations allow.

In March, the AJHL playoffs were postponed after Hockey Canada suspended all sanctioned events due to COVID-19.
