Truck parts company fined $138K after worker seriously injured in Edmonton

A heavy-duty truck parts distributor has been fined $138,000 after a worker was seriously injured in a workplace incident at an Edmonton service centre.

Fleet Brake Parts & Service Ltd. pleaded guilty in the Edmonton Court of Justice on June 24 to one count under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code for failing to ensure a worker was protected from falling. Thirteen other charges against the company were withdrawn.

The charges stem from a Jan. 22, 2024, incident in which a worker was struck by a vehicle hood before falling into an open drop pit, suffering serious injuries.

The court imposed a $138,000 fine, including the victim fine surcharge. Fourteen related charges against Parts for Trucks were also withdrawn.

Both the company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty.
