Lucy the elephant given clean bill of health: Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Edmonton Valley Zoo says their elephant, Lucy, has been given a clean bill of health.

The zoo made the announcement on Thursday on Facebook, saying independent elephant experts Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino and Mr. Michael McClure came to Edmonton to assess Lucy.

Neither D’Agostino nor McClure had examined Lucy prior to their visit; however, McClure had been a consultant for the zoo’s elephant team last year on a matter regarding Lucy’s foot.

Both experts reportedly said that the staff at the Edmonton Valley Zoo provides Lucy with excellent medical care, superior nutrition, and an enriching environment.

“At age 50, Lucy is considered geriatric and is actively managed for several chronic health conditions, including age-related osteoarthritis, chronic sinus congestion, and episodic low blood protein,” read a statement from the zoo on Facebook.

“Medical evidence, consistent with the majority of elephant health experts consulted since 2010, continues to show that moving Lucy carries a significant risk of her dying in transit due to her severe arthritis and unique chronic respiratory disease. The Edmonton Valley Zoo remains committed to providing Lucy with the best possible care for the rest of her life here in Edmonton.”

The zoo is also reportedly looking to make expansions to Lucy’s indoor and outdoor exhibits.
