Grande Prairie RCMP warn of hazardous driving conditions amid heavy snowfall

Grande Prairie RCMP are warning the public to use caution on the roads as heavy snowfall and freezing rain create hazardous driving conditions across the region.

Police said Sunday morning they are responding to multiple motor vehicle collisions in both the city and surrounding rural areas due to poor road conditions and bad weather.

“The recent freezing rain, paired with the current heavy snowfall, has created very dangerous driving conditions,” RCMP said in a statement.

Drivers are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must be on the roads are reminded to slow down and drive according to conditions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a snowfall warning for Grande Prairie just before 8 a.m. Sunday, saying a band of intense snowfall is bringing poor visibility and rapidly accumulating snow.

The agency said total snowfall amounts of five to 10 centimetres are expected, with the system moving northward through the morning. Visibility is expected to be reduced at times.
