Alberta man accused of making online threats against Montreal airport

Police say an Alberta man living in Montreal has been charged after allegedly making online threats against the Trudeau airport and other “key infrastructure” locations in Quebec.

The RCMP’s Federal Policing Eastern Region alleges the 38-year-old posted threatening comments on his X account, counselling attacks on the airport, the Port of Montreal, Hydro-Québec control centres and various transportation networks.

An RCMP spokesperson tells CityNews the accused was “giving out the flaws about the infrastructures” through the X posts.

Those posts were allegedly made between June 26 and July 31, according to the charge sheet.

Officers with the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested the man Friday and seized electronic equipment “following a short investigation.”

Christian Barriault is facing three charges, including uttering threats to cause death of bodily harm, and uttering threats to burn, destroy or damage real or personal property.

He appeared at the Montreal courthouse by videoconference Monday and was released without objection from the Crown. He’s set to return to court in October for further proceedings.

The RCMP says it was first notified in July by the SPVM, which was initially contacted following a report from Hydro-Québec’s security department.
