Thieves targeted second central Edmonton tower by marking doors with glue

Residents in a second building were targeted by the same alleged thieves police warned marked doors with glue in a central Edmonton condo tower before breaking in.

A day after Edmonton police warned of break-ins at luxury apartments near the Alberta legislature, neighbours say they fear they were the next building targeted.

A resident told CityNews the condo board at Symphony Tower warned their neighbours across the street to be on the lookout after some homes at the 106 Street and 97 Avenue tower were broken into and had several items stolen in early July.

The EPS has said suspects used glue to mark the doorframes of units that were unoccupied, hoping to find out who was on vacation.

People living in River Vista Condominiums also noticed dots of glue or silicone above their doorways and removed them, something that surprised a resident in the building.

That resident, Tom Malone, was surprised to learn what the apparently unsuccessful thieves targeting his home were trying to do when Edmonton police released pictures of suspects.

“You’re kind of going, ‘wow, really,’ and then you think, well, people can get in the building, and they know that in some of these units people go away for vacation, and ours is a very quiet building,” he said.

“We kind of joked, [saying] that’s kind of impressive. And we thought … well, if they want to do that, every time [I] walk down the hallway I’m looking at doors, to just make sure they’re not going to try this trick again.”

Edmonton police confirm both buildings were targeted, but haven’t said how many units were broken into or what was taken.

They believe the suspects marked the doorframes of the Symphony units with glue on June 29 and July 1 before returning at a later date.

It’s also not exactly clear when the actual thefts happened. But police believe the suspects marked the doorframes of the Symphony units with glue on June 29 and July 1 before returning at a later date.

Photos of suspects released by police show two individuals: one man with blue jeans, a blue jacket and a navy blue baseball cap; the second man has black pants, a blue shirt, and a dark baseball cap.

The two suspects were seen around 106 Street and 97 Avenue on July 1 from midnight to 1 a.m. Police believe they were at the same location on June 29 around 1 a.m.

The break-ins were reported on July 7, with apartment security and tenants from several units saying their homes had been broken into and various items stolen.
