Redwater RCMP have arrested a suspect in connection with the tampering of wildfire sprinkler systems in an active evacuation zone.
On Thursday, officers on patrol encountered a man trespassing in the restricted area. Upon further investigation, they discovered he had been interfering with sprinkler systems deployed by the fire department to protect nearby homes from encroaching wildfires.
The tampering rendered the systems inoperative, potentially increasing the risk to the community.
The individual was taken into custody and charges are pending.
“We want to send a clear message to those who have evacuated as well as to those who enter evacuation zones to cause harm,” stated S/Sgt. Michael Jaszczyszyn, District Advisory NCO for Eastern Alberta District. “We are patrolling evacuation areas to ensure the safety of the communities and will continue to apprehend, arrest and charge all those who commit criminal activities within those zones, especially those than can facilitate the spread of wildfires.”
RCMP continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay clear of evacuation areas for their safety and the safety of others.
