Alberta’s police watchdog has concluded its investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting in March 2022.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says following months of investigation, it has determined the use of force by EPS officers was justified in order to protect the public and no charges will be laid.
The incident in question occurred on March 25, when witnesses saw a man sitting at a picnic table in front of Edmonton police headquarters, who was believed to be holding a handgun.
Officers confronted the man before he fled towards the LRT line on 95 Street.
Officers then tried to de-escalate the situation, after the man raised what looked like like an extended barrel gun. After several minutes, four officers fired their guns and the man died an hour later from his wounds.
After the shooting, investigators found two potentially improvised firearms and a modified imitation firearm at the scene.

ASIRT says two civilian witnesses were interviewed, however, neither saw the shooting.
CCTV was also collected from EPS Headquarters and City of Edmonton LRT, however, ASIRT says neither recorded the incident.
An autopsy following the shooting confirmed the man who was killed, was under the influence of methamphetamine and would have been at the level indicative of impaired driving.
