Alberta to build highway rest stops beginning in 2024

The provincial government is planning to create safety rest stops along major highways and has put out a request for proposals on what to build.

This step follows gathering intel from municipalities and the trucking industry, according to a provincial release.

The rest stops will serve as a place for people to take breaks, fill up on gas, eat, rest, or stretch their legs.

Alberta Transportation will evaluate the proposals and the highest rated one will serve as an action plan for building the selected rest areas.

Any sites in development will be built based on consultation and input from local stakeholders, says the release.

“Alberta’s transportation sector has long advocated for clean, safe, and well-equipped amenities at highway rest stops; they are essential to both our professional commercial truck drivers and Albertans. We commend the Government of Alberta for its ongoing support and efforts to establish a safer and professional working environment for our transportation industry and all those on Alberta highways,” said Jude Groves, board chair, Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA)

Benefits of the rest stops along the highway include improving roadside safety, enhancing the visitor commuting experience, and providing “innovative, efficient and environmentally sustainable services”, says the provincial release.

“Speaking as a female driver, an ideal rest stop is safe and well lit. I am delighted that the Alberta Government has launched an initiative to improve rest areas. Drivers are typically behind the wheel for up to 13 hours daily. Having a safe, clean place to refresh can make all the difference,” said Shannon Holicza, In-Cab Instructor, Bison Transport.

Those who are interested in submitting a proposal have until December 2022 to qualify for the process.

The bid process and the finalized contract are expected to complete in late 2023, with construction for the rest stops beginning in 2024.
