Calgary Chamber of Commerce wants more clarity around Alberta COVID-19 restrictions

CALGARY – The Calgary Chamber of Commerce is praising the Alberta government’s decision to launch a new program to to fight against COVID-19, but says more clarity around the initiative is needed.

The chamber says the restriction exemption program giving businesses a choice to require proof of vaccination in lieu of more stringent restrictions is a critical step in the fight against COVID-19, but added that the initiative has prompted more questions than answers.

The program Premier Jason Kenney announced yesterday will force people in the province to show proof of vaccination to enter select stores, restaurants, nightclubs, casinos, concerts and libraries on and after Sept. 20.

Businesses can opt out of the program but must operate at reduced capacity and with distancing rules or restrictions including no more than six people at a table in a restaurant.

While a news release from the chamber did not outline all of the questions the program has prompted for members, it says more clarity around exemptions is needed.

The chamber also called on the province to accelerate the implementation of a QR code system and find ways to simplify program processes to help businesses.
