Alberta reports 550 new COVID-19 cases, active infections surpass 4,000

CALGARY — Alberta identified 550 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

The new infections come after more than 8,500 tests were completed — a positivity rate of around 6.4 per cent.

Thursday’s case count is the highest in the province since May 21.

There are now 4,101 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

As for hospitalizations, there are now 146 people in hospital — an increase of 8 from Wednesday. Meanwhile, 36 people have been admitted to the ICU.

Of those in hospital, 117 are unvaccinated, or about 80 per cent of all patients. Thirty-two of the 36 people in the ICU are also unvaccinated.

No additional deaths were reported on Thursday.

On the vaccine front, 7,765 vaccine doses were administered over the last day — 2,303 of which were first dose appointments.

To date, 76.6 per cent of the eligible population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 67.4 per cent are now fully vaccinated.
