Variants continue to climb in Alberta, three new deaths announced

CALGARY (CityNews) – Variants of concern now make up more than one-quarter of Alberta’s active COVID-19 cases.

Of the 644 new cases reported Sunday, 235 were identified as variants.

There are now 1,972 active variants of concern included in the province’s 7,698 active case total — 25.6 per cent.

The new cases were confirmed from 11,953 tests, giving the province a positivity rate of about 5.4 per cent.

The Calgary zone continues to lead Alberta in active cases (3,565), doubling the number of the next most infectious zone, Edmonton (1,734).

The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 has declined slightly, with 277 people currently in hospital compared to 283 Saturday.

Sixty-three of those patients are in intensive care units.

Three new deaths have also been announced, bringing the provincial death toll to 1,983.

The province has now administered 594,723 doses of vaccines, with Canada passing the 5 million mark Sunday afternoon.
