Alberta reports 207 variants from 668 new cases, one new death Saturday

CALGARY (CityNews) – Variants of concern are still on the rise in Alberta, with the province reporting close to one-quarter of its active cases as variants Saturday.

Out of 668 new cases identified, 207 have been confirmed as variant cases.

There are now 1,803 active variant cases in Alberta, accounting for 24.5 per cent of the total 7,366 cases active.

It is an increase of 149 active variant cases in a single day.

Calgary is leading the province with 3,407 active cases.

Edmonton is next in line, with 1,624.

The province completed 11,522 tests, for a positivity rate of 5.7 per cent.

There are 283 Albertans being treated for COVID-19 in hospital, with 65 patients in intensive care units.

One new death has been reported.

The province has now lost 1,980 people to COVID-19.

Vaccinations continue to roll out, with 577,223 doses administered as of Saturday.
