EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s police watchdog is looking into a case where a 36-year-old man died in police custody.

On Feb. 6, Edmonton Police responded to a complaint of a drunk man near the area of 60 Street and 35A Avenue.

After arresting the man for public intoxication, a prohibited gun was found on him.

He was taken to the EPS Southeast Division station, where he stayed the night in a cell.

However, the man was found unresponsive in his cell in the morning when officers tried to give him his meal.

EMS later pronounced him dead.

An Investigation found a small amount of drugs in his cell.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will look into the incident to see if anything went wrong with the man’s arrest or his time in custody.
