Cougar euthanized after showing aggressive behaviour in Banff

BANFF (660 NEWS) – Parks Canada has put down a cougar that was showing aggressive behaviour in and around the Town of Banff.

Staff tracked the animal to the backyard of a home near Wolf Street and tranquillized the big cat.

During a physical examination, staff discovered the female cougar, about eight years old, was emaciated and in poor health with a number of injuries, including a broken canine tooth.

“Parks Canada reviewed all possible options for managing this incident,” Parks Canada said in a statement. “By hunting within the Town of Banff, and showing aggressive behaviour to a person with an on-leash dog, the cougar’s behaviour indicated it was becoming increasingly less wary of humans as its health deteriorated.”

They determined she was the same cat that approached a man walking his dog on Jan. 10 and spotted twice over the past few days in the town, and made the decision to euthanize the animal.

There is still a cougar warning in effect for the area and any sightings should be reported to the Town of Banff.
