Manslaughter trial begins for Ontario trucker charged in death of Edmonton woman

EDMONTON _ An Ontario truck driver has pleaded not guilty to a charge of manslaughter in the death of a woman at an Edmonton motel a decade ago.

A jury trial has started for 52-year-old Bradley David Barton, who is accused of killing Cindy Gladue.

The 36-year-old Metis and Cree woman was found dead and soaked in blood in a bathtub of the Yellowhead Inn on the morning of June 22, 2011.

Court has heard Barton was working as a long-distance furniture mover when he met Gladue in Edmonton.

Gladue’s mother, Donna McLeod, sat in court as the judge warned that evidence during the trial will be graphic and unsettling.

Crown prosecutor Julie Snowdon said in her opening statement that an autopsy found Gladue died due to a catastrophic and unusual injury to her vagina wall.

Seven men and seven women were selected to sit on the jury. The trial is scheduled for 34 days.
