Friends remember victims of Ukrainian Airlines flight

MONTREAL (CityNews) – A year after Ukrainian Airlines flight PS752 was shot down in Iran, family and friends of those on board are still struggling with the loss of their loved ones.

Montreal newlyweds Siavash Ghafoury Azar and Sara Mamani could have been found out at a Montreal restaurant with their best friends before Jan. 2020.

“Although a year passing nothing changed **** the pain is still there,” said Gounash Pirniya, a best friend to the couple.

“They had thousands of plans for their life. Sharing their ideas, what they to do, if they want to have kids in the future. All of it gone in a moment.”

The couple moved to Canada from Iran, as did Pirniya and their partner Nadar Jafari Nadoushan, developing a close bond for six years. They took trips across the country together and helped with wedding planning.

“When you immigrate, it’s a bit different. Friends become close family. So, maybe by name they were just a friend, but they were really like my brother and sister,” Pirniya explained.

“A lot of moments we were sharing stories. Sharing your life basically, secrets, sharing your plans,” explained Nadoushan.

Azar and Mamani were both engineering graduates from Concordia University and had started their careers.

“They were just at the beginning of their life… that’s what bothers me all the time,” added Nadoushan.

They were in Iran to celebrate their wedding with family. They were returning to Montreal when they were among the 176 that lost their lives.

“If it was a natural death, it would be so different. The way it happened its making it harder,” explained Pirniya.

“You feel they were supposed to be in this world and they’re not… it’s not forgivable and not forgettable.”
