Kenney speaks up for mask bylaws, pushes back against anti-maskers

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s premier is pushing back on people who claim that masks do not prevent the spread of COVID-19.

It follows large protests in Calgary by people saying mask bylaws are a violation of rights and while casting doubt on other dangers surrounding the virus.

Kenney says the debate has become too polarized, including from people trying to criminalize others who do not wear masks.

“To suggest that masks are all just some big plot to condition people to be passive victims of state authority, folks let’s just take it down a notch.”

For those citing rising COVID-19 cases in Calgary and Edmonton following the introduction of mask bylaws, Kenney says the claims ignore the evidence.

“If it weren’t for mask mandates, the case numbers would almost certainly be significantly worse in those cities. We’re going with the preponderance of the science here and we’ve tried to do this in a thoughtful way,” said Kenney.

“I regret that this debate has been totally polarized.”

Kenney was speaking during a Facebook Live question and answer session, where he confirmed evidence shows masks work and cases would be far higher in Alberta’s major cities if the bylaws were not in place.
