No confirmed flu cases yet in Alberta

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Despite a sharp surge in coronavirus cases across the province, the same can’t be said for the flu.

According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), there have been no lab-confirmed cases of influenza so far this season.

At this time last year, there were roughly 450 cases. Last season saw over 8,400 cases with 39 deaths.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw credits the measures taken to curb the spread of COVID-19 as working to prevent the flu.

So far, the number of Albertans being immunized for the flu has risen with nearly 1.3 million shots administered.

Just over 1.4 million people got the flu shot between Oct. 2019 and May 2020.
