EDMONTON (660 NEWS) — In an update Friday afternoon, the province said it has detected 907 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta, along with five deaths.

This increases the pandemic death toll to 398, and there are 8,593 active cases around the province as well.

One of the five deaths is in the Calgary zone and linked to a continuing care centre. The other four deaths are in the Edmonton zone and three of them are linked to continuing care.

Out of the active cases, the Edmonton zone now has the majority share with 3,572, while the Calgary zone has 3,553 active cases.

There are 240 people in hospital and 54 in the ICU, with the majority of hospitalizations in the Edmonton zone.

On Thursday, the province announced additional measures to help curb the spread of the virus amid a shocking rise in cases over the past few weeks. Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said it will take a couple of weeks to determine if these measures have a positive effect.

Dr. Hinshaw will be giving her next press conference on Monday afternoon to update weekend numbers.
