Six deaths, 727 new COVID cases in Alberta on Sunday

CALGARY (CityNews) – Six Albertans have died and 727 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the province.

During an update on Sunday, the province said all six deaths were related to a previously known outbreak at a hospital or care centre.

In Edmonton, three women in their 90s and one in her 70s passed away.

In Calgary, a man and a woman – both in their 80s – also died.

This comes after the province reported a record-high 919 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and five deaths on Saturday.

That brings to the total number of cases reported over the weekend to over 1,600.

The COVID-19 death toll in Alberta is now 363.

The government said the data provided is preliminary due to technical issues.

WATCH: Alberta doctors pushing for mandatory COVID-19 restrictions

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw has warned if we don’t contain the virus now the province’s health care system could be in trouble.

“I have said there is no single right way to navigate this pandemic. This remains true and we must be mindful of protecting the impacts of COVID and the impacts of restrictions. At the same time, I have said this is a critical juncture. We need to change the trend in this province.”

She said people with symptoms of the virus are ignoring rules and advice and going outside, spreading the virus, when they should be isolating.

Premier Jason Kenney said backwards steps like these will have major impact on every single Albertan.

“If these numbers continue to grow at their current pace, they will put our healthcare system at risk, they will put our economy at risk and our loved ones at risk. Every Albertan needs to be concerned about these numbers.”

Meanwhile, 51 schools in the province are under a COVID-19 watch, meaning each of them has five or more confirmed cases of the virus.
