Proposal to charge for residential parking permits passes

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A city committee has approved proposed changes that could see Calgarians pay for residential parking permits.

Right now residents get their own permits for free, allowing them to park in their neighbourhood while also barring other drivers from parking there without a permit.

This change, though, means people could be charged annual fees of up to $125.

City Administration said the program runs a deficit of almost $1.5 million a year and charging for the program would help close that gap.

Many Calgarians, though, aren’t happy about the proposal, saying their taxpayer dollars should go towards funding the program and they shouldn’t be expected to pay to park in front of their own homes.

The motion passed by a slim margin, of five-to-four and will now be debated by the rest of council on Nov. 2.
