City of Edmonton in support if province imposes stricter COVID-19 measures

EDMONTON (CITYNEWS) – The City of Edmonton is in support of the provincial government imposing a series of additional public-health measures as COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

Edmonton and its surrounding area has 1,085 active cases – nearly 57 per cent of Alberta’s total 1,910 cases. The region has just over a quarter of the province’s population.

Edmonton officials will be in support if the province considers reducing the number of people permitted in indoor and outdoor gatherings, including restricting Thanksgiving dinner to members of an immediate household.

Reports indicated on Wednesday that Dr. Deena Hinshaw would announce new measures for Edmonton-specific restrictions.

The city also said it would be on board if Alberta restricted non-essential travel and encouraged work-from-home programs for businesses in Edmonton.

Interim city manager Adam Laughlin directed the request to Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services during a city council meeting on Wednesday.

“The City of Edmonton has been an active partner with Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services, and will continue to follow their lead in keeping Edmontonians safe,” said Laughlin in a statement.

“We look forward to hearing from Dr. Hinshaw at her next regularly scheduled media availability and will be sharing any City of Edmonton specifics in due course.”

Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw is scheduled to hold a media briefing on Thursday.
