Man found dead in holding cell, ASIRT to investigate

EDMONTON (CityNews) – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will be investigating an in-custody death.

On June 23, at approximately 4 a.m., the Edmonton Police Service responded to a call at a gas station in the area of 51 Avenue and 122 Street.

It was reported that a male who appeared to be intoxicated by drugs had entered the gas station and was behaving in an agitated manner.

Police took the approximately 40-year-old male into custody under section 115(2) of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act and placed him in a holding cell in Southwest Division.

At approximately 7 a.m., the detainee was found unresponsive in his cell. EMS was immediately called, and pronounced the male deceased on scene.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this death.

The identity of the male has not yet been confirmed.
