Food trends to watch for in the new year

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — So what will we be eating in the new year?

It’s a question that’s almost impossible to answer but there are a few hints as to what could trend upwards once we enter 2020.

Plant-based food took off in 2019, with burgers causing all the rave among some fast-food chains.

eatnorth.com’s Dan Clapson took a look at that trend and says for 2020 he predicts a shift for meat eaters

“People are eating less meat but the people who are still wanting to eat meat, we’ve seen a lot more of a desire for traceability when it comes to consumers who are shopping for meat,” Clapson said. “One thing that’s interesting with that is that there are local delivery systems set in place, one is called truLocal, and they ship just cuts of meat to your door.”

Clapson adds he believes the movement toward a cocktail or beer without alcohol will continue in the new year.

“I think we’re going to see companies that are more local like Big Rock Brewery or ToolShed releasing zero proof beer,” Clapson said. “In that same mindest, non-alcoholic spirits, so there’s a lot of gin’s on the market that have zero per cent alcohol but were meant to taste like a gin.”

Clapson says gluten-free isn’t even a trend anymore, it’s just part of everyday life so these trends could morph with that as well.
