Stepson of man who died by suicide at Alberta Legislature speaks out

EDMONTON (CityNews) – We’re learning more about the man who took his own life on the steps of the Alberta legislature.

Ken Chan, 62, served in the Canadian military for 25 years and tried to get access to assisted dying for his mental health struggles.

“He would help anybody who needed help,” said Chan’s stepson, Harald Linder.

According to Linder, Chan suffered from depression and possibly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

He said Chan’s request for assisted dying was eventually turned down.

Less than half an hour before his suicide, Chan sent a final e-mail to his co-workers and family.

“I would like to use my death to bring attention to medical assistance in dying,” said Linder reading the email.

Those targeted by Chan’s letter included the federal and provincial governments.

On Tuesday, provincial Health Minister Tyler Shandro spoke about Chan.

“Any Albertan, any Canadian who takes their life–I think it’s a horrific event that obviously affects everyone involved including their loved ones, their family. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones.”

Shandro added the UCP government continues to increase its investment in mental health and that services are readily available for everyone who needs them.
