Newspaper headlines, world leaders’ tweets: Reaction to Trudeau’s win

TORONTO (680 NEWS) – Both British Columbia Premier John Horgan and Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart are among those congratulating Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his election win.
The headline in the Vancouver Sun was clear Tuesday morning, following the election of the minority Liberal government – “Liberals Punished.” But both Horgan and Stewart say they hope to work with Trudeau on what’s important to Canadians on the West Coast.
The Calgary Sun was a lot more savage in the morning paper – a front page cartoon Trudeau was pictured flying on a witch’s broom, the headline there: “Welcome to our nightmare.”
Outside of the country, leaders from around the world also weighed in on the win.
Early Tuesday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump posted his congratulations to Trudeau on Twitter, calling it a wonderful and hard-fought victory, adding that Canada is well-served.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he’s looking forward to working with Trudeau on Canada’s priorities, such as girls’ education and climate change. He said that the U.K. and Canada share history and values.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted that Canadian society is once again relying on Trudeau.

The Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, said that he is pleased that Canada has voted to keep moving forward.

The dust is still settling from yesterday’s election, but it appears the Liberals won 157 seats — 20 fewer than they won in the 2015 election.
