Carbon tax fight continues with meeting of Attorney Generals

SASKATOON — Attorney Generals from four provinces are meeting to discuss an Ontario court’s decision that upheld the federal carbon tax to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer is joining his counterparts from Ontario, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick in Saskatoon on Tuesday.

The Government of Alberta has launched a legal challenge against the federal carbon tax legislation calling it unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, the Liberal-led federal government said they will enforce the tax on Alberta in January 2020 after Premier Jason Kenney and the UCP scrapped the provincial tax in May.

The Court of Appeals in Ontario and Saskatchewan have shot down legal challenges from both governments, claiming the federal Liberals have the jurisdiction to impose the tax.

The Government of Manitoba is also challenging the federal carbon tax in court, while New Brunswick withdrew its challenge earlier this month.
