CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Thousands of people are able to return home in northern Alberta, but two wildfires are still burning out of control.
An evacuation order was lifted Monday afternoon for the hamlet of La Crete and surrounding areas in Mackenzie County.
The communities are still under an evacuation alert and could be asked to leave once again if wildfire conditions don’t improve.
Scattered showers on Monday helped crews on the ground stop growth on both the Chuckegg Creek and the Jackpot Creek fires.
Helicopters also used infrared technology to look for hot spots and resources were deployed to where they were needed most.
With more rain in the forecast, Alberta Wildfire hopes there’s a chance to make progress on the fires.
Right now more than 1,000 people are fighting the Chuckegg Creek fire and more than 100 are dealing with the Jackpot Creek fire.
More than 8000 @MackenzieCounty evacuees from the northern Alberta wildfires will be able to return home today at 2pm. The area remains under evacuation alert & residents must be ready to leave on short notice. #abfire
