‘Ending the war on fun’; Liquor Laws eased ahead of long weekend

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — If you’ve ever wanted to crack open a cold one in Alberta’s provincial parks without fear of getting a ticket, there’s some good news for you.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced on Thursday that the UCP government is “ending the war on fun” and plans to ease liquor laws to allow Albertans to enjoy alcohol while out in Alberta’s protected areas.

“In the future, people will be able to grab a beer, walk around a summer festival in this province without fear of being arrested, ticketed or fined,” said Kenney. “If they can do this in pretty much every country of Europe, I think we can treat Albertans as responsible grown-ups as well.”

This May long weekend, the liquor ban will be lifted at Aspen Beach, Miquelon Lake, Garner Lake, Dillberry Lake, Pigeon Lake, Whitney Lakes, Jarvis Bay and Wabamun provincial parks. There is no ban in place in Alberta Parks’ other provincial campgrounds.

Some of the liquor laws were put in place by the previous Conservative government in an attempt to provide a safe, enjoyable experience for families that enjoy camping across Alberta.

The complete rules surrounding the announcement aren’t immediately clear, and Kenney did not say if cannabis use would be allowed as well.
