With a week remaining in election campaign, UCP continues to lead: poll

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – With just over a week to go in Alberta’s election campaign, it appears Calgary could once again be a deciding factor.

Since 1948, voters in Calgary have backed the party that forms government in every election.

According to Mainstreet Research, the United Conservative Party has a lead of 50.5 per cent support province-wide among decided voters compared to 38 per cent for the New Democrats.

All other parties are floundering with support in the single-digit range.

In Calgary, the UCP has slightly less support and sits at 49.3 per cent compared to the NDP’s 38.7 per cent.

Across the rest of the province, numbers haven’t changed much since the start of the campaign. The NDP is out front in Edmonton (49-40) while UCP has a strong lead across the remainder of the province (62-26.)

Mount Royal University Political Science professor Lori Williams said there’s a reason smaller parties are struggling to get any traction.

“We’ve got two very different choices in the UCP and NDP. For most people they’re fairly attached to one and fairly opposed to the other, so other parties are not going to look like a safe risk.”

The Mainstreet poll also suggests there are fewer undecided voters compared to a week ago.

Before the leader’s debate on April 4, several opinion polls had the number of undecided voters in the low 20 per cent range. Now, it is down to 11 per cent.

The survey polled 876 adults between April 4 to 5. The margin of error is +/-3.31 per cent and is accurate 19 times out of 20.
