Alberta creates unit to fight hate crimes, extremism in the province

EDMONTON – Alberta is creating a unit to fight hate crimes and extremism in Alberta.

Premier Rachel Notley says it will bring together specialists from various police forces to focus exclusively on hate groups and hate crimes.

Notley says people must work together to fight racism, hate, intolerance and religious persecution, including Islamophobia.

She says the government stood in solidarity with Muslim Canadians after the shooting at a mosque in Quebec two years ago and it does the same today with Muslims around the world.

A provincial hate crimes unit was one of the recommendations in a government report released last June.

Officials say a police-reported hate crime happens in Alberta about once every three days.
