Lloydminster RCMP charge two in hockey fight

LLOYDMINSTER (660 NEWS) — RCMP in Alberta have charged two people, a father and son, with assault after they allegedly attacked the referees of a Lloydminster Bandits Junior B game.

Mounties had been told two referees, 36 and 24, had been attacked in the change room of the game by family members of one of the players on Feb.18, 2019

“Apparently, these parents were upset over the call the ref made, and they went to the reffing change room and assaulted these two referees,” said Constable Michael Hagel.

Hagel says he’s never seen anything like this in his career.

“You’re the parent, you’re the parent in this game. You have to be the adult; you have to be that guiding post and if these kids are seeing this is how you behave in a hockey game, they’re going to grow up thinking this is okay and that’s not okay as adults,” he said.

The game happened about three weeks ago, and RCMP wanted to make sure they had everything in order before they moved ahead with criminal charges.

“We’re still calling for more witnesses and more people who saw this incident, we’d like them to come talk to us,” said Hagel. “But we spoke to the witnesses who were there, the victims, we spoke with a lot of the patrons at the hockey game, and that’s why it took a lot longer than normal.”

The referees had minor injuries.

Police have charged 51-year-old Scott Payne and 23-year-old Jayden Payne, both of Lloydminster, with assault in relation to the skirmish. They’ve been released on their own recognizance ahead of an appearance on April 8, 2019.

Because the matter is now in the hands of authorities, the North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League has no comment.
