Tax platforms still uncertain ahead of spring election

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has said that it’s wait and see for her tax platform after announcing she won’t bring in a sales tax, a health premium or a payroll tax.

Notley said there is no plan to change tax advantages for low and middle-income Albertans when asked if any changes will be coming to the tax rates.

Notley’s government hiked the corporate tax rate, reduced the small-business tax, brought in a carbon tax and replaced the flat tax on income with a system that sees high income earners pay more.

Meanwhile, United Conservative leader Jason Kenney has said that he will get rid of the carbon tax, but has also not released much of his tax platform.

Notley defended her platform by saying that UCP party members endorse returning to the flat tax rate, adding Jason Kenney has talked about bringing in toll roads.

She says the NDP will bring in more details closer to the election, which must come in March, April or May.

A throne speech has been scheduled for March 18, 2019.
