Dog abandoned in Edmonton parking lot finds furever home

EDMONTON (CITYNEWS) – A happy ending for a story with an unfortunate beginning: a pup named Wyatt found abandoned in a Costco parking lot has found a loving family.

The Edmonton Humane Society says the “little warrior” was surrendered to the shelter on Nov. 3, after being found neglected and left inside a closed cardboard box within a garbage bag. The Humane Society estimates that Wyatt is Shih Tzu-type dog and is around five years old.

“The manner in which the dog was left and his condition upon arrival is extremely concerning,” said Peace Officer Bodnarchuk, Supervisor of Animal Protection Services at EHS, after the dog was taken in.

“In the entry exam, our medical team noted that his entire body was covered in dense mats tight to the skin, to the point where they were preventing him from defecating. The mats were also caked in urine and feces. Matting to this extent can cause discomfort and damage to the skin and joints, leading to pain. In addition, the staff determined he was thin and his nails overgrown.”

An investigation is open and the Animal Protection team has received some tips about the dog and its potential former owner, but EHS says it can’t speak much more about the investigation while the case is open.

Weeks later, Wyatt now has a new home and a new name. Gus’s furever family told the humane society that he is playful and cuddly and that they “can’t believe that he is such a happy boy considering what he’s been through.”
