Woman still recovering after charity bike ride during summer

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Back in August, a group of four adult cyclists were involved in a crash during the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

At the time, Calgary EMS said they all sustained soft-tissue injuries, but one woman says her injuries were even more severe.

Jacquie, a first-time rider in the event, says the cyclists are told not to draft, to leave at least a bikes worth of space between you and the rider ahead of you and to ride single file.

“It’s nothing like that when you leave there, it’s like…people (are) pumped and they’re ready to go and it’s like a race for them, it’s not even a ride,” she said.

She recalls being hit at about 40 kilometres an hour from behind while riding down Bowfort Road and being thrown off her bike.

“I remember the concrete kind of coming at my head, and I just put my arms out so I had road rash all down both arms, knee and that’s when I hit my foot somehow and completely just shattered the top of it,” she explained, and added, since the incident she has been working from home, going to physio once a week. “The muscles still have to be rebuilt before they can hold the weight again.”

She adds everybody is touched by cancer, and it’s a worthy cause. In fact, their team raised about $210,000.

She says the goal of sharing her story is to hopefully find out how the other adults who were injured are doing.

We’ve reached out to the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer for a comment about the safety measures they have in place to protect participants.
